Ken Allen has spent nearly 30 years as a police officer with the Atlanta Police Department. The investigator, who now works on a specialized burglary task force, first got involved in the union when longtime IBPO leader Marc Lawson invited him to a union meeting. He began as a steward on the evening shift in his zone and eventually worked his way up to president of Local 623.

One of the biggest achievements of his union work, he said, is the new camaraderie between the city’s unions. “We always used to fight each other,” he said. “Then we started working together and stopped letting the city play divide-and-conquer. Now, when we go into meetings, we know what’s happening with each other and we can stand up together. It’s been a huge step forward.”

When he’s not on the job, Ken and his wife, Karen, and their two daughters spend as much time as they can on the lake with their jet skis.
