Members Vote Yes to New Contract

March 3, 2009

The last state contract ratification ballot has been counted, with members of bargaining units 1, 3, and 6 voting overwhelmingly in favor of ratifying the new three-year agreement. The percentages voting yes were 94, 92, and 94 respectively.

"I'm pleased with the outcome of the vote," said Theresa McGoldrick, president of Unit 6, Local 207. "I think members realize that given the state of the economy and our budget issues, this was a fair contract."

The contract provides raises of 1% in July 2009, 3% in July 2010, and 3% in July 2011. It also includes improved FMLA language, increases in the employer’s contribution to the dental, optical, and dependent care benefits, and improved bereavement leave language.

"Local 291 is happy with the outcome of the vote," said Jack Donegan, president of Unit 1, Local 291. "Our members showed strong support for this contract and we will continue to need their support in the coming months as we navigate the tough economic climate of the state."

"The extremely high percentage of people voting in favor of this contract illustrates that members are acutely aware of the state's financial situation," said John Mann, president of Unit 1, Local 292. "Of course, we had hoped for bigger increases and fought for bigger increases, but the reality is, this contract is a fair economic package."

Ballots were counted Tuesday at NAGE headquarters by members and NAGE staff.
