Echoes of Romney in Gov. Patrick's Attack on State Workers

January 15, 2008

Governor Deval Patrick rode into the State House on a wave of hope and promises to treat state workers with more fairness, dignity, and respect than his predecessor did. It appears today, however, that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Gov. Patrick on Sunday announced in the Boston Globe that he was proposing as much as a 66 percent increase in employee-contributions to health care, dashing the hopes of thousands of state employees who had believed in the governor's campaign rhetoric.

Speaking this morning to members of the state contract negotiations team, National President David Holway vowed to fight the governor and legislature on the increase, and reiterated the importance of all state members getting involved.

President Holway also wrote letters to the editors of the Globe and the Boston Herald, responding to their report and editorial, respectively, concerning the health-care premium issue. He also wrote a letter to Gov. Patrick requesting an immediate meeting with the governor and other state union heads. Both letters can be downloaded below.
