CAMPAIGN: Protect Your Social Security in 2009: Support Repeal of WEP and GPO
Legislation has been reintroduced with bipartisan support in both the Senate (S 484) and the House (HR 235) to repeal the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP).
Approximately 1.5 million state and federal employees, police officers, teachers, firefighters, and other public employees are seeing their Social Security retirement benefit significantly reduced or eliminated because of these two unfair provisions.
NAGE is again this year placing the fight for the repeal of WEP and GPO among our highest priorities. Last year, with our members' targeted WEP/GPO repeal emails to Congress, we gained the respect and support of hundreds of Congressional leaders, including Senator John Kerry (D-MA), who remains chairman of the Subcommittee on Social Security.
In late February, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) introduced S 484, with the support of 11 co-sponsors, including Sen. Kerry, Susan Collins (R-ME), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Richard Durbin (D-IL), and Bill Nelson (D-FL).
Rep. Howard Berman, of California, introduced HR 235, with the support of 194 co-sponsors. All ten Massachusetts Congressmen have agreed to support the bill, with all but two having formally signed on.
