Governor Vetoes $6 Million for Trial Court from Supplemental Budget

August 10, 2009

Governor Deval Patrick vetoed $6 million of the $9.4 million the legislature allocated for the Trial Court in a supplemental FY2010 budget.

The August 7 vetoes were as follows:

Line No.
Item
Supplemental Budget
Amount Vetoed
0330-3337 Trial Court Additional Expenses
$950,000
0333-0002 Probate and Family Court
$500,000
0335-0001 Boston Municipal Court
$150,000
0339-1001 Commissioner of Probation
$4,170,000
0339-1003 County Corrections Administration
$300,000

"The governor's actions regarding the Trial Court supplemental budget are appalling," said David J. Holway, NAGE national president. "Security is stretched way too thin at too many courthouses and probation officers are struggling with triple and quadruple caseloads. This is no way to uphold public safety."

"The supplemental budget items may not have been a cure for what ails the Trial Court, but they were certainly welcome relief," said NAGE Trial Court Director David Bernard. "These vetoes are a recipe for disaster. So many courthouses are already staggering with too much workload and not enough people to do the work. In bad times, it's only going to get worse."

The NAGE legislative team will work with legislators to attempt an override of the governor's vetoes.
