NAGE Member Named to GIC

On October 15, 2015, NAGE Local 207 Executive Vice President Bobbi Kaplan was sworn in as a commissioner on the Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission (GIC). The seat is the second seat on the board held by a NAGE member (NAGE Trial Court Local 229 President Margaret Thompson also has a seat on the commission). The GIC’s main purpose is to provide and administer health insurance benefits to the Commonwealth's employees and retirees.
NAGE National President David J. Holway spoke highly of Commissioner Kaplan. “Bobbi has fought tirelessly for NAGE members and we are delighted that she is going to continue her efforts while having a much larger impact.” Holway added, “NAGE has been a catalyst on the commission and our voting presence on the board will benefit all public employees across the Commonwealth.”
The GIC is a state agency governed by a seventeen-member commission appointed by the governor. The GIC’s FY2016 appropriation is $2.1 billion. There are currently 240,000 enrollees and over 435,000 people covered by the GIC.
Kaplan said, “my experience particularly as the former longtime Labor Chair of the NAGE Health & Welfare Trust Fund has taught me that our members need a strong voice to ensure that their current benefits are not only maintained but improved. I intend to be that voice on the GIC.”
NAGE Executive Vice President and Local 207 President Theresa McGoldrick also commented. “I have worked with Bobbi for years and she is one of the strongest voices for fair treatment of Massachusetts state employees I have ever met. She will succeed in a position of authority on the commission.”
