Court Officer Assault Pay Amendment Included in Budget

NAGE is pleased to report that the Court Officer Assault Pay amendment that we fought to include in the House and Senate Budget was included in the FY 17 Budget Conference Committe Report that was released last night.  The committee of six House and Senate negotiators filed their report after reaching accord on Wednesday afternoon.

The language updates the current assault pay statute to cover court officers injured from acts of violence in the courtroom or public areas, holding areas, other designated areas of the courthouse, or from subduing or apprehending escaping prisoners.   Current law only applies to officers injured as a result of a violent interaction with a prisoner.

Local 458 President Dorianna Medeiros said "we will no longer have to engage in litigation with the Trial Court over assault pay, thanks to NAGE's strong union victory with our support through phone calls and office visits."

The bill is expected to be taken up by the House and Senate later today.  Once the bill is voted on, it will go to the Governor, who will have ten days to review it before signing it, or offering veto's.  Please stay tuned for more information.
