Mental Health Care in Georgia: Some Recommendations from Employees, Consumers and Concerned Citizens

Over the past few months employees of Georgia Regional Atlanta (with some input from members in Milledgeville) have been meeting together to discuss the proposed changes to Mental Health Care in Georgia including privatization, the closing of hospitals, restructuring etc.

Those meetings led to some of the best ideas on how to take care of not only the consumers of mental health care services, but the employees who provide their care.

A committee called Voices of Concern, which included some consumers and concerned citizens, came out of those meetings. Also as a result of those meetings, a document was sent to Dr. Frank Shelp, the new Commissioner, and to the Mental Health Project at the Carter Center.

We wanted to make sure those of you who didn’t attend the meetings are kept in the loop. If you would like to get a copy of the entire paper, you can check it out below or call (404) 575-2223 (or (888)SEIU-YES) and we will send you one. If you are willing to distribute this paper to your legislator please call and we will get you a copy for him/her as well.
