Dougherty County School Bus Drivers Speak Out Against Furloughs

In April, Dougherty County School Bus Drivers and members of SEIU/NAGE gathered at the school board meeting in downtown Albany to let the board members know that they were not happy with the Finance committee’s decision to furlough school bus drivers. What made them more upset was that the school system implemented the furloughs without discussing it with the employees, so that they found out about the deduction when they received their paychecks.

Many school systems around the state are facing hard financial times. With the loss of revenues from property taxes and educational cuts from the state, many school districts are facing tough financial decisions. Many school districts, including Dougherty County, have decided to balance their budgets on the backs of workers instead of cutting the waste and expense at the top.

Our members understand that in tough times, sacrifices sometimes have to be made, but governments should do their best to CUT THE FAT AND NOT THE MUSCLE!
