Massachusetts court officers face potentially dangerous situations in their courtrooms every day. But thanks to the work of a group of court officers with specialized physical tactics training, every CO can learn safe, effective ways to handle—or even head off—such confrontations. Charlie LeClerc, an assistant chief court officer in Wrentham District Court, is the physical tactics coordinator for the entire Trial Court system and part of the Trial Court's special response team.

IBPO Local 569 President John Rossi has been a police officer for 23 years, and involved with the IBPO for nearly all of them—a practice he urges younger officers to emulate. "I think it is extremely important for young members of any police department to become involved early on in their local union," said Rossi, a detective corporal with the East Providence, Rhode Island police department. "I always tell new police officers to attend meetings, run for office, speak up gain a voice and control your destiny. It's your union!"

NAGE Local R4-45 President Roy Morrisette
Roy Morrisette has been cutting fresh meat for military families in the Tidewater, Virginia, area for more than 26 years. When he began working for the Defense Commissary Agency, or DeCA, he signed up for the union, worked his way to Chief Steward, and was elected president of NAGE Local R4-45 in 1994.
IBPO Local 364 President Rachel Thomas
Born and raised in the city she now serves, Rachel Thomas is a 27-year veteran of the Springfield, Massachusetts Police Department, the secretary of IBPO Local 364, and a member of the IBPO's national advisory committee—a role she considers both a priority and an honor. "I'm very honored to be a member of the IBPO National Advisory Committee," said Thomas. "I'm able to speak for police officers from my own local, and make a difference for all of the members of the IBPO."

As a long-time leader of Local 56-002 and a paramedic with AMR of Kauai, Hawaii, President Tiffany Sentani has come to understand the importance of compromise. "We are fortunate that our local management is willing to work with us," said Tiffany. "We work well together to find solutions that work for both sides."
IBPO Local 673 President Phil Grubb
Officer Phil Grubb, a 15-year veteran of the Chattanooga, Tennessee Police Department, is the president of IBPO Local 673, the only IBPO local that represents law enforcement officers from two different agencies, the CPD and the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department. He joined the IBPO as soon as the union came to Chattanooga some five years ago, and has been a local executive board member for four of those years.
