Selection committees for the Edward G. Gillooly Journalism Scholarship and Marc Lawson Criminal Justice Scholarship today announced that they would be awarding the $1,000 journalism scholarship to Tara Vocino and the $1,000 criminal justice scholarship to Patricia Sprague.
"You can't imagine how difficult it was this year to choose the winner," said Marc Lawson. "We had a significant increase in applicants, and the quality of their essays was outstanding. I'm thrilled to know that such talented and upstanding individuals will be pursuing careers in criminal justice."
Mrs. Pauline Gillooly, who reported the journalism scholarship committee's decision said, "I know that Ed (Gillooly) would be so proud of the young woman who was chosen to receive his scholarship. Tara (scholarship winner) really seems to have the love for writing and reporting that Ed had, and it pleases me to know that she will carry on his deep dedication to great news reporting."
Ms. Vocino is the daughter of NAGE Local R1-292 member Mary Vocino; Ms. Sprague is a member of IBCO Local R1-72.
